In November of 1963, both the Athletic Council and Texas A&M administration integrated athletics by opening all events and facilities to every student regardless of "race, color or creed." Yet, it was not until the fall of 1967 that African-Americans began participating in varsity sports.

African-American athletes have made great contributions to Texas A&M in the field of athletics. Since the 1970s, they have dominated a number of sports, particularly football, track and basketball. Many have gone on to professional careers in sports, particularly the National Football League.
