In 1967, Coach Charles Thomas was instrumental in integrating varsity sports at A&M by recruiting the first African-American scholarship athletes on the track team-Curtis Mills, Sidney Chachere and Edgar Harvey.

Over the past 34 years scores of African-Americans have run, jumped, hurdled and thrown themselves into the track and field record books. Scores have lettered, many hold SWC, NCAA and All-American titles, at least two hold existing world records, and at least six have been inducted into the Texas A&M Athletic Hall of Fame. Their talents and skills continue to make A&M a collegiate competitor of note.
