Carl Hertzog

Carl Hertzog (cont.)

Hertzog’s first book, undertaken for McMath, was La Lepra Nacional by Gonzalo de la Parra (Chihuahua, 1923). Serving as the personal secretary to President Obregon of Mexico, de la Parra used this propagandistic book to speak out against the spirit of revolution and plead for the restoration of stability to the country. Though the title page claims Chihuahua, Mexico as the place of publication, the printing actually occurred in the United States to avoid the possibility of prepublication leaks. When the books were finished, de la Parra loaded them into a taxi and disappeared.
