Paul Kane’s Frontier (1971), edited by J. Russell Harper, represents yet another visually opulent and tasteful book designed by Jo Alys Downs for the University of Texas Press. The attractive two-color title page, with commendable letter-spacing, prints the title in a large font, the size of which is subdued somewhat by being printed in blue. Both the copyright and contents pages effectively manage large amounts of material. The color plates are subtly reproduced, without using too strong a cast or over-inking the plate, mistakes which often spoil books of this nature. Overall, Paul Kane’s Frontier is a triumph in the effective use of color. The designer terms it “a memorable job that I would not repeat at any price. I could write several pages on the problems involved but I don’t want to stir up my nightmares again.”
